Many Christians misunderstand the difference between happiness and joy, quite often using these terms as though they are interchangeable. BUT! If you have been into the Bible for any appreciable amount of time you know that happiness and joy are quite different. Happiness is external and it is based on our circumstances, while joy comes from the inside, it is an internal condition. It is only when we understand the difference that we are able to experience “joy-filled” living. The current conditions that we find ourselves living in can easily foster negative emotions that are often overwhelming; happiness is but a fleeting commodity in many cases. So what is the Christian to do?
Joyce Meyer in her new book, “Be Joyful,” tackles this question, as well as the many obstacles the Christian is up against when searching for joy-filled living. She uses the Apostle Paul's teachings as the basis for guiding us towards the achievement of this seemingly transient emotion. Joyce presents the reader with 50 short but very direct lessons, which will greatly encourage and equip us to triumph over the negatives, and find joy in the most difficult situations. Each lesson begins with a “chapter relevant” scripture, and ends with a “Things to Think About” section. In each chapter Joyce also uses nugget boxes containing a quote or saying from various sources.
This book is a right now resource! Given the stressful times during which we are living, I am of the opinion that Joyce has hit a home run. This book has hit the mark for me and I will be reading through it again in the very near future. This time I will be taking it much more slowly, absorbing as much as I can, so that the elusive emotion of joy, and the concept of living the joy-filled life will become realities for me. If you want to live the more than abundant life that Jesus died to give you, you may want to begin your own personal journey by reading this book.
