We are living in times that produce extreme pressure and we often find ourselves losing our peace. Many people, Christians included, are having a hard time coping with many challenges, and the constant state of chaos that they are confronted with daily. Frustration, tension, mental fatigue, and troubling thoughts are seemingly becoming the norm with the passing of each day. How do we guard our minds, hearts, thoughts, and actions? Happiness is an outside job, but joy is an inside job! So, how do we keep our external problems, situations, circumstances, and unhappiness on the outside? How do we prevent them from entering inside of us and stealing our joy?
Joel Osteen in his new book, “Peaceful On Purpose,” provides a recipe that may help the reader unlock a secret strategy; one that shows us how to live peaceful lives without getting bogged down in difficult times. We often turn to people as our sources for happiness, instead of turning to God, allowing Him to handle things.
This book comes in at 106 pages (not including the pages for notes) and is an easy read. Joel as he always does, writes the way he preaches. From the first word to the last word the message is uplifting. There is no beating around the bush as he is direct and purposeful. If you are sad, down, or just not having a good day, the words on the pages sure have a way of turning the mood. I really like the way Joel handles the presentation of life experiences and stories. He seamlessly works them into the context without the verbosity that some authors seem to cherish. Questions are also nicely added to the recipe without missing a beat. Recap boxes are placed at strategic places throughout the book which allows the reader to easily review important points. These reference points may also be used as dynamic “change your mind” nuggets. Joel also includes a “Questions For Group Discussion” section which includes three questions for each chapter along with a small area for answers. In the back of the book there are ample pages for notes, and helpful quotes are provided as well. I enjoyed reading this book and found it to be an uplifting experience.
