Keion Henderson's book, “The Shift,” is at it's core a book about self discovery. The main focus and theme center on leading the reader along a path of discovering divine purpose. Keion does not hide behind the words he presents in this book, but rather lays his life “out there” with example after example of both his personal struggles, and his victories through them. The best word that comes to mind regarding this is, REAL! No phoniness here as his goal is to present himself in a very honest way with the intention in mind that the readers may use his examples as a means to help them with their own life stories.
Many of us have read books and heard many sermons about change, renewing the mind, staying the course, living victoriously, going through the fire, letting go and letting God, using negative situations and circumstances to make us stronger, casting all our care on Him, and I can go on and on. Keion's perspective on “getting from the mistake to mastery is surviving the shift-and shifting to survive;” seeing ourselves as victors not victims allowing God to transform us by His process of healing and strengthening. In addition to his real life examples the use of shifting and surviving examples from the Bible are used to further drive his points home.
Keion Henderson uses what I like to call ,"delightful," words which provide the title and emphasis of each chapter. Each title begins with the letter “D” and I call them, "de-light-ful," because when they are understood, and the chapters' goals are met, these words may very well add the fullness of light back into a life that may seem overwhelmed when negative, dark, and challenging circumstances become the norm.
Reading this book was not as enjoyable for me as I would have liked. There were, however, aspects of the book that I really did like. Each chapter begins with an engaging quote which sets the tone for the chapter. Each chapter ends with, “Shift Keys,” which along with a few questions are designed to help you shift your perspective and access that chapter's keys for self-development and spiritual growth. After spending a few minutes reflecting on the questions you are encouraged to spend some time talking to God about the shifts going on inside of you. Simple, honest prayers will do and the prayer presented after the questions may serve to get you started.
